Inventory Setup
Inventory Setup
Setup covers the master data and control settings that all inventory transactions depend on. This is the first section new implementers should complete before training end users on daily execution.
Setup areas
- Item masters and item categories.
- Units of measure and barcode or foreign item code definitions.
- Inventory locations and optional WMS enablement.
- Reorder levels, supplier purchasing data, and item sales prices.
- Tracking rules for serial numbers, batches, expiry, warranty, and quality inspection.
Key pages
- Items
- Item Categories
- Units of Measure
- Foreign Item Codes
- Inventory Locations
- Reorder Levels
- Inventory Item Sales Prices
- Supplier Purchasing Data
Recommended setup order
- Define Item Categories so default accounts and item behavior are consistent.
- Create Units of Measure before loading item masters.
- Create Items and decide whether each item needs serial, batch, expiry, warranty, or quality controls.
- Create Inventory Locations and enable WMS only where detailed warehouse control is needed.
- Set reorder levels, supplier purchasing data, and sales prices for operational readiness.
Tracking and control decisions
- Serial tracking is appropriate for unique units that need lifecycle traceability.
- Batch tracking is appropriate for lots, expiry control, FEFO handling, or recall exposure.
- Quality inspection can be required for incoming or controlled items.
- Weight, volume, and storage attributes become more important when WMS, putaway, and capacity management are used.
Setup mistakes to avoid
- Changing tracking modes after an item already has movements.
- Mixing simple warehouse use and detailed WMS use without a clear process boundary.
- Leaving reorder levels or supplier defaults blank for purchased stock items that need regular replenishment.
